Original Post - Discrimination is Alive and Well in a Local Public Event - Posted by Mark Holman on December 12, 2008 at 4:57pm

First off, let me say I love creating music. I love playing my songs. I love singing my songs. I love being in front of people so I can impart a little of why I wrote the song. I thought that I would be able to further my local musical endeavors by joining an organization that would be conducive to the songwriting craft and would allow me to meet honest decent folks. In some respects that did happen and I am thankful that I did become a CFSG member.

What I did not expect was to meet someone affiliated with the organization who actually frames the image of CFSG in the Public Eye as a discriminator. Discrimination - now that is an ugly word. I am not happy with the person that is in control of the websites for that group because of this word. There is an extremely one-sided favoritism in her eyes that simply fits the classic (Webster's) definition of the word discrimination. I did not really know about discrimination until I joined this group and ran into her. I guess we all need to learn about discrimination sometime in our life by experiencing it firsthand. I am being discriminated against simply because of what? Yep - I write songs and I joined an organization that allows someone not of the group to make independent decisions concerning Publicity.

Do I live with this, or do I speak my mind? Both, I think. Since this December 10 CFSG Showcase is being touted to be a BIG deal by this person and others with the obvious displays of photographs, I have decided to speak my mind. I want everyone who will ever read this blog to know about the inequity and realize that discrimination is alive and well in CFSG marketing/publicity maybe internally as well should it be dicovered that she was instructed to do this openly. I will push this simply because I do not want another person from Fayetteville to have to write this sort of blog again. Once is enough.

To outline what I mean for the reader, here is but one example of this blatant discrimination. I recently participated in a Songwriter's Showcase on December 10, 2008 at Paddy's Irish Pub for the Cape Fear Songwriter's Guild. Just look on this page where this blog appears and you will see the pictures. You will find no reference of my participation in that event on this site yet that event is plastered all over the Home page of this site. WHY? I just looked at the pictures and I see that everyone else that played the Showcase are represented here.

I am not.

Maybe I am not a member of CFSG and just think that I am. Maybe all those Saturday afternoons I met with members of this organization were just me dreaming. Maybe all those Wednesday nights that I played some of my songs at Paddy's were just figments of my imagination, that they never really happened at all. Maybe I am still dreaming, . . .NOT.

Is that OPEN discrimination? Seems so to me and anyone else who cares about me and what I am attempting to accomplish in music. Did she do this on here own volition, or was she instructed to do this by someone else?

What would make someone do this? Are my songs too good? I guess when you look at it from an organizational perspective, who would want or allow a nobody from the street to walk in out of nowhere with a fistful of songs and album concept that transcends anything ever imagined by this local group of songwriters - usurper - you will not do that. Do the whispers contain things like, "Can we let that happen? Mark is very good at Marketing. Let's not give him any room to exploit this event for his own gain? Will the spotlight be stolen right from under our nose?" To any other speculative questions like this, I say Thhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

You'd have to be the judge of whether or not I am discriminated against or just sour grapes. My writing of this blog is to let people know of this inequity as a warning? or Public Service Announcement? or just General Information. . . .?

So whatever happens, . . .so be it. Maybe this wake up call will serve its purpose - to rid the CFSG of any discrimination and find a happy medium for all of its members. I just want anyone who might be attracted to this to consider what no one else will tell you, . . .think real hard. Since it just happened to me this time, maybe I am wrong in feeling this way about being left out on the sidewalk when that should not be the case. . .

Go away discrimination.
Rest your head here no more.
Go away discrimination.
We do not need you anymore.

Thanks for the invite. You are in the line-up Sweetie. I just checked the site. Thanks for putting up all this wonderful music. Love your Christmas Song. I feel like going GREEN too. Just so you know, others will come here for you too!

Thanks Alice for that confirmation.

Just so anyone else checking would like to know, yep I am listed but you'll find no link. It was here but has been removed.

Here it is: http://capefearsongwritersguild.com/slideshows/2008MembersSlideshow...

I am the first picture unless it gets switched around by the person running that website.

It will not surprise me should that happen in fact, I expect it will since I have posted this message. The pictures there have no identification of the artist. I think you will recognize me though.

Anyway, other than to me and the person in charge of the pictures, does it really matter?

Wow, Mark I think this Laura lady must really hate you. She switched the photos again and now you are nowhere to be found. Did they kick you out of the Cape Fear Songwriter's Guild? If so, your STOCK just went up ten fold because now you truly are the ROGUE Poet.

I have never seen anything like this in my life. JEERS a thousand times over to the lady with her name plastered all over the pictures. Talk about lousy self-promotion.

Remind me to never use her for anything.

I just read Alice's post.

Yep, there is a grudge against you Mark.

The webmistress is conveniently leaving you out which tells anyone watching that she does not like you. She is not even being subtle about it. It really is too bad she has that kind of power in a CLUB that is supposed to be the same for anyone involved.

You know this means there are hidden agendas going on.

You said they had a lot of turnover - - maybe this is one of the reasons?

Time for you to start the Fayetteville Songwriter's Guild and forget about all the pettiness from people who do not matter.

There are other ways to make your presence known and I know there are a few people who will love having you. With your marketing abilities, that should happen soon.

You have my support. I now have a cause.

Nope, this URL has been switched out again and goes somewhere else now manually changed as a result of this post.

Here is another I just checked that will be correct for what 20 minutes if that?

Mark is the 4th Picture in this ARRAY - Look for it to change

Wow, this is starting to get way too unbelievable. I mean the depths of their persistence to erase any trace of my involvement?

I did not know and can still hardly believe such HATE existed in the world but now I am discovering it first hand. This is amazing to me, . . .simply amazing as I have done nothing to cause this.

It is working for now - nice shirt. You took your songs down and put the two from the Showcase up I hear. How do I know it was recorded at the Showcase? Guess there would be no way to know except to ask the person who recorded it for you. Sounds like you were pretty entertaining to me. Let me know when you play out again.

Change To Original Post - Interesting Inequities Concerning the Recent Cape Fear Songwriter's Showcase
Posted by Mark Holman on December 12, 2008 at 4:57pm

I recently participated in a Songwriter's Showcase on December 10, 2008 at Paddy's Irish Pub for the Cape Fear Songwriter's Guild. I just looked at the pictures posted on this site about the event and I see that only a few of the people who played the Showcase are represented here.

To me that is a slap in the face and it should be to the other people who were conveniently omitted as if they never were there putting their art out to the world. To me, members of the group should be represented fairly or do not even mention the event.

What do you think?

Should all members of an organization participating in an event be fairly represented and promoted?

I'd love to hear what you think.

At 10:46am on December 16, 2008, Alice said… (Posted to my page….It did not get published..........I disapproved and deleted it)

My friend Mark Holman should have his picture in here too.

Why would an organization like yours do that to one of your members?

Did you not think people would be aware of this?

So the inequity Forum post by Mark leads to this.

He is right. Inequity does exist in the CFSG or at least with how these pictures are arranged.

It really is too bad to see such a pompous person in charge of representing this organization. It makes you question what that organization really is all about doesn't it?
